My husband and I began saving native wild birds in 1974 when a neighbor
brought us an orphaned nestling mockingbird. At the inception of what
was to become a lifetime commitment, we worked alone to save orphaned,
sick, and injured birds.Through determination, hard work, and much independent
research we began to have success with one species after another.
In 1974 very little was known about the many species we worked with.
There was little or no published data about how to heal broken bodies,
medicines to cure illnesses, proper diets to thrive and grow on, psychological
development, etc.
As word spread throughout the area of our successes and willingness to
care for wild birds, our caseload rapidly increased. At first, we cared
for the birds at our own expense. Soon it became necessary for us to reach
out and ask others for help if we were to continue our work.
Through the advice and donated efforts of an attorney, Wild Wings of
California, Inc. was founded in 1987 as a nonprofit, nonpolitical organization
under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code of charitable
organizations.
